Stephen Foster was born on the same day that Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died, the Fourth of July, 1826, to a prosperous and politically-connected Pennsylvania family. He went on to become the first well-known "commercial" American songwriter, that is, he signed publishing contracts for which he was sometimes paid royalties.
